Medical Visits

Tavira has several clinics, but most folks I’ve met go to the Tavira Clinic (Clínico de Plaza) in the Tavira Plaza. It’s a doctor’s office and urgent care center that’s open seven days a week from 8 am to 10 pm.

Medical Records

In many cases, you will be required to obtain copies of medical records (lab results, imaging, etc) from the provider and present them to your doctor at your next visit. In some situations, you will be able to obtain the records immediately and others you will have to wait for. The provider of the service can tell you how long until the results are ready.

SNS

Once you have your RESIDENCY card (not your Visa), you can get your SNS # from the Centro de Saúde (Health Center). Check out Americans & Friends PT on Facebook or other reliable sources for instructions on how to get your SNS.

This health number is used for access to public health care. Although many expats primarily use private health care, there are situations where the public health services are needed or desired. It is also needed to receive the fullest discounts on prescription drugs.

Upon obtaining your SNS #, you can download the SNS app and create your account. This app will keep track of all your prescriptions, immunizations and any healthcare provided within the public health system.

Useful Apps

SNS 24 – As mentioned above, this is a very handy app to keep track of all your public health care data.

My HPA Saude – provides information for any appointments with hospitals & clinics in the Hospital Particular do Algarve and the Clínica Particular do Algarve groups.
