Important Dates to Remember

Rui Caetano, our beloved friend, mentor & Portuguese guru has provided us with a list of dates that we should NOT forget.

IUC – Road/Registration tax
  • Due: Due on the month of your cars’ first registration.
  • Payment Information: Finanças Portal
  • IMPORTANT: Electric cars are exempt from this tax.
IMI – Property Taxes
  • Due: May
    • If the amount is above a specific threshold, the payment can be made over 2 or 3 payments in May & August OR May, August & November.
  • Payment Information: Finanças Portal
  • IMPORTANT: The first year we were in our apartment, we didn’t owe any property taxes. However, the second year, we did receive a bill for this tax.
IRS – Income Taxes
  • Due: June 30th (but can be filed as soon as April 1)
  • IRS Response: The IRS will usually notify you within 2 months of filing whether you owe anything or not.
  • Payment Information: You may get notification in the mail so it is prudent to look on the Finanças Portal to determine if you owe & how much.
IPO – Car Inspection
  • Due: The month of the vehicles first registration. This includes cars and motorcycles.
    • 1st Inspection: 4 years after initial registration
    • 2nd Inspection: 2 years after last inspection
    • 3rd Inspection: 2 years after last inspection
    • Subsequent Inspections: Annually
  • Where: Tavfer Inspecção Auto
IMT – Drivers License Renewal

Due: Date is on the back of your DL in Column 11.

Residency Card
  • Due: 60 days prior to Expiration Date on your Residency Card
